Barbazu creature model
Overview
• Creature model for Neverwinter Nights 1, with two variants • 1802 triangles • Functioning in-game, using pre-existing animations • Unfinished and unreleasedBarbazu are the 'shock troopers' of the baatezu, a race of devils. Burly, mean, and unpredictable, they were to be a relatively common enemy for our Survivor premium module. Everything you see here is based off of some really killer concept art, courtesy of our art lead, Andy Nisbet.
Their main distinctive features are their beards, which are spiky, tangled messes. However, the beard geometry you see in these shots is placeholder. The final would have used transparency maps applied to an arrangement of flat planes, achieving an effect similar to that shown on this page. However, I was not the artist handling the texturing, and even so, I don't believe it was ever fully completed.
Note also that the texture is a simple placeholder I created to better communicate the overall design.
Though untextured and never completed, it was rigged up for animation, and could be taken in-game. It referenced an existing animation set (a lizardman animation set, I believe), the plan being that we would later implement custom animations for a handful of the more commonly used actions.
Below, you can see the 'naked' barbazu. Being a recurring enemy, we planned on having a few different variations of the barbazu model. Thus, I created 'naked' base model. Notice he doesn't even have a beard!
